width="249"Necessity is the mother of invention, and in my opinion, nature is our best source of inspiration. Color, style, practical application, are all evident within our natural world. Artists, illustrators, clothing manufactures have all been known to turn to nature for illumination when designing their next creative piece.

The mammal kingdom offers several examples of pouch carrying critters that illustrate this point perfectly. These animals are classified as marsupials. wildernessHaving a dependable pouch and pack when in a questionable environment can make a huge difference. In that small, innocuous pouch may be a knife, matches, compass, light, a cell phone – a few very basic survival tools. When it comes to food and snacks you don’t need to contact your local caterer to make elaborate meals for your trip.

Anything that is rich in nutrients and energy while being compact enough to fit in your bag will do the trick. When you take off for an outdoor adventure, such as a fall hunt, a wilderness photo shoot, or just a day hiking and birding, it’s a must to choose your equipment wisely. Old fashion pouchesThroughout history the peasant and the wealthy have used pouches to carry their necessities. Small pouches once used by notable characters, like Henry the VIII, Marie Antoinette and Christopher Columbus are sold at auction for hundreds of thousands, sometimes millions of dollars. A pouch reportedly used by Issac Newton to carry his rudimentary tools for measuring solar gain recently sold for 2.4 million at Sotheby’s. Do not underestimate the value of the pouch, then or now.

Needless to say if you are not a collector, this is interesting, but not influential in your life today. The history of the pouch is a simple one based on the practical necessities of everyday life. For millennia the pouch has played a functional role in our lives. The predecessor of the modern day purse or day pack, the “possibility bag” was common daily apparel in the days of the pioneer and the mountain man. So named because it could carry everything one could possibly need in a day away from the homestead.

There is definite truth to the old SNL adage; to look good is to feel good. How do we accomplish all of this; safe, secure, streamlined, efficient, comfortable and fashionable?
